This book uses attention as a prism through which to interrogate the literary text. It starts from analyses of the changes that the mediasphere and communication technologies have brought for the contemporary subject, submitting him/her to the tyranny of a new attention economy. My point is that the contemporary novel and memoir resist such influences and evince a great deal of resilience by promoting an ecology of attention (Citton) based on poetic options whose pragmatic effect is to develop an ethics of the particularist type. To do this, I draw on critical and theoretical literature hailing from various fields: psychology, but also more prominently phenomenology, political philosophy, and analytical philosophy (essentially Ordinary Language Philosophy), alongside the ethics of care and vulnerability. By using a selection of fictional and non-fictional narratives, I address such issues as social invisibilities, climate change, AI and cognitive disability and end up drafting a poetics of attention.

Dans des textes alarmistes au contenu parfois pseudo-scientifique, certains penseurs et savants britanniques s’inquiètent de l’usure « raciale » de la nation, du péril héréditaire et de la présence insidieuse du danger dans le corps social. La connaissance de ce contexte, marqué par la renaissance du genre gothique, permet de faire sortir de l’ombre des textes inquiétants et d’apporter un éclairage nouveau sur des romans célèbres, comme L’étrange cas du Dr Jekyll et de Mr Hyde, Le portrait de Dorian Gray, L’île du Dr Moreau, Dracula et la fiction de Conan Doyle consacrée à la figure de Sherlock Holmes.L’être dégénérant en perpétuelle mutation revit un passé personnel, familial et biologique. Son corps est à la fois étranger et reconnaissable, monstrueux et déchiffrable. Certains romanciers prônent la régénération, d’autres mélangent jusqu’à les confondre la morbidité et la puissance, le dégénéré et le défenseur social, le malade et le médecin, le fou moral et le fou de moralité. En créant des êtres si indignes qu’il va devoir les liquider, l’écrivain transforme la dégénérescence en création.

"The marriage plot is a ubiquitous theme across the history of the novel, beginning from the earliest examples of long-form prose published in the eighteenth century. What Sacred Engagements brings to this well-trodden area of literary studies is a unique feminist perspective on the relationship between fiction and interfaith marriage during a moment of broader cultural discourse about religious tolerance in England. Conway reads quite broadly for the marriage plot, including among her readings novels by Samuel Richardson, Frances Brooke, Elizabeth Inchbald, and Maria Edgeworth in which minor characters marry outside of their own religious institution, or the novel's hero and heroine have a failed courtship and do not marry by the novel's end. Her intervention at the nexus of literature and religion is also unique; existing studies in this subfield often focus on a particular religious sect and literary representations of it, whereas Conway reads for relationships forged across religious boundaries. While a political history of England in this period reveals a partial picture of how tolerance came to be during the Enlightenment, Conway's study of the novel shows a more nuanced story about the challenges of peaceful coexistence through its representations of interfaith marriage. By foregrounding women's right to liberty of conscience, interfaith marriage counters the privatization of religious affect and the naturalization of women's subordination in marriage. The interfaith marriage plot invites us to review the terms governing our narratives of marriage and community, and the ethics of sociability that sustain them, both in relation to the history of the novel and to our contemporary moment"--
